Charity Song Becomes Relevant

Call Me Lucky is a song I wrote after seeing, and being inspired by the sad story of rescued donkey.

Some years ago, I wote Call Me Lucky after visiting an animal sanctuary in the West country. Lucky was a donkey who had been nursed back to good health after being found in a neglected state.
Listening to the song again because of writing about Esther and other rescued animals previously, the words seem to be relevant all over again.

Call Me Lucky

verse 1
Was a time I had no name, Had no name at all
Still I believed luck would call
Call me away
To a safe place some day
I believed it,
Now I'm standing tall

chorus
Call me Lucky to be
So well cared for and free
In green fields and the sun To make me strong
Call me Lucky to win
Now my new life can begin
Call me Lucky
When you came along

verse 2
I was tired and unhappy
But what could I do
Giving my best
Just to live
Trudging and toiling
In snow, wind and rain
In a cruel world
Can warm hearts forgive?

chorus
Call me Lucky to be
So well cared for and free
In green fields and the sun
To make me strong
Call me Lucky to win
Now my new life can begin
Call me Lucky
When you came along

For here I've more worth
It's Heaven on Earth
A sanctuary
Peaceful and calm

verse 3
Lucky horseshoes and heather
And black cats and charms
Keep them and trust all the while
When tears fill your eyes
Dream of blue sunny skies
Think of Lucky
Call me Lucky and smile

chorus
Call me Lucky to be
So well cared for and free
In green fields and the sun
To make me strong
Call me Lucky to win
Now my new life can begin
Call me Lucky
When you came along

Call me Lucky, call me Lucky
Call me Lucky
